HARRY POTTER:
ENOUGH FIRE TO SURVIVE, ENOUGH WATER TO LOVE
by Elizabeth Hazel, Astrologer
|

Harry Potter – a boy unlike any other. Harry's birth date is July 31, 1980. He was born under the sign of Leo, a sign of strength, courage, valor, honor and generosity. His Leo Sun gives Harry a big heart, loyalty to his friends, and a desire to perform well in front of others. This is the sign of warriors and kings, and many valiant and unforgettable historic people share this sign.
On the day of his birth, the Moon moved from Pisces into Aries. I've chosen a birth time of 10:30 p.m. that gives Harry both an Aries Moon and an Aries Ascendant, or rising sign. This harmonizes well with Harry's fiery Sun sign. The Aries Moon gives Harry his impetuous, risk-taking nature as well as his distinct lack of emotional reflection. Especially in youth, people with an Aries Moon can be foolhardy in taking risks, impulsive in relationships, and not given to deep thought about the nature of relationships in general. Harry's temper can be explosive, flaring wildly at any provocation. The Aries Moon and Ascendant also speak clearly about Harry's permanent head wound – his scar – as well as the numerous head wounds and headaches that he receives at the Dursley residence and at Hogwarts. The state of Harry's head is a dominant feature of "Order of the Phoenix," a book that takes places as the difficult transiting planet Saturn is making contact with his Moon and Ascendant. This planet is also tied to periods of depression, as well as the burden of heavy responsibilities.
Mercury is in the reticent sign of Cancer. This suggests that Harry's home environment with the Dursleys impressed upon him the need for silence and secrecy about his abilities and his parents. Emotions, family history, and the natural insecurities of a growing boy are simply not open for discussion in this household. Cancer is a sign known for its need for security and safety. Although Harry keenly dislikes living with the Dursleys, the house on Privet Drive has been a safe haven for him through his childhood and first years at Hogwarts (although due to transiting Saturn, it will not remain safe). Because of the childhood conditioning from the Dursleys, Harry has a hard time asking necessary and pertinent questions about his family and fate in the wizard world. His reluctance to ask questions and talk about his feelings can (and has) caused problems, but as the sixth book begins, we will find that Harry will become much more interested in information that has been hidden from him.
Harry has Venus in Gemini. This planet shows his love of flying, and the great sense of joy and freedom he gets when zooming on his Firebolt. He enjoys having friends and being a part of the social scene. Harry's two best friends are a boy and a girl – one of each. Gemini likes variety! It also indicates that Harry will tend to be fickle – or at least date around a bit – before choosing someone for a lasting relationship. Venus' contact with mysterious Neptune suggests the ability for speaking other languages, especially mystical or rare languages like Parseltongue. The ability to control his voice may provide specific defense skills down the road.
As might be expected, Harry's chart is not all sunshine and roses. Difficulties are built into this chart, and the planets suggest that these difficulties would begin in childhood. The most challenging combination of planets in this chart is an alignment between Mars, the planet of injuries and battles, and Pluto, the planet of death and destruction, placed in his house of open enemies. Mars and Pluto are together in the sign of Libra, and extend their evil vibrations through a square aspect to Harry's Mercury in the sign and house of the family. Mercury rules childhood events, and Mercury placed in the 4th house and afflicted by Mars and Pluto forecast horrific events during his childhood, events that will destroy the fabric of his family and home life.
Harry also has Uranus, the planet of upheavals, in Scorpio – often a difficult and troubled sign for natal planets to occupy. Uranus is associated with interruptions and dramatic turning points, and is positioned in the 8th house of death and transformation. Oddly enough, although Uranus in Scorpio in the 8th house relates to the sudden loss of his parents, it also implies dramatic changes in his financial status due to inherited wealth. This happened when Harry was first taken to Gringott's by Hagrid, and shown a vault full of wizard money to be used for his schooling years. Rowling has stated that James Potter was very wealthy, so we may anticipate more money, as well as property, passing into Harry's hands. Once again, Harry's dysfunctional Mercury has extended its Cone of Silence to details about the extent of his inheritance, but since Mercury forms a lucky trine aspect to Uranus, we may safely assume that Harry will be extremely well off when he comes of age, and will discover this when he bothers to ask about it.
The chart for the death of Harry's parents is a good example of just how bad things can get in Harry's chart! Voldemort murdered James and Lily Potter on October 31, 1981, near midnight. The planetary picture on that date could hardly be worse for Harry. A line-up of transiting planets in Libra activated Harry's Mars-Pluto, bringing violent battles and multiple deaths that night. Some of the results of that night were immediate – the loss of his parents, as well as his placement in the Dursley home. Some of the consequences of that night were long-term, as Harry continues to unfold the truth about his parents, his birth, and their death during his years at Hogwarts.
Libra is a sign concerned with the truth, but we discover at the end of the "Order of the Phoenix" that there are many levels of truth. Dumbledore has carefully fed Harry little pieces of truth as issues have surfaced. But at the end of the 5th book, the big truth – the prophecy – is finally revealed in full. Pluto is the planet most strongly connected with long-term truths that require several years to unfold, and inevitably have harsh life-or-death consequences. This planet is critical in Harry's birth chart, as well as in the transit chart for Oct. 31, 1981. The impact of Pluto is irrevocable – once events have taken place, the destruction cannot be repaired. Nevertheless, the Oct. 31 planetary picture is not only deadly, it is also suspicious. The Moon made contact with the bizarre planet Neptune near midnight – this suggests that there may well be crucial actions that night that were concealed, and have not yet been revealed by Rowling.
Libra is also concerned with law and social order, ethics and morality. Ultimately, Voldemort and his Death Eaters are waging a political battle within the wizard world. The issues of muggle - wizard relations and pure-blood supremacy both predated Harry's birth, but his own life path was irrevocably wrenched apart by the surging crisis that these issues caused. Harry's natal chart indicates that if and when he resolves his battle-to-the-death with Voldemort, his action will have a profound and irrevocable impact on the laws and social order of the wizard world.
As fantastic as it may seem, the death curse that bounced off of Harry is clearly shown in the planetary picture. Transiting Venus, the planet of love, was precisely opposite the position of Venus in Harry's birth chart. Harry was given the protection of his mother's love when she died to save him. Lily's death created what one might call a "mirror of love" that reflected back anything that encountered it, so Voldemort's death curse was returned to him. The goddess for whom this planet is named was famous for her mirror, which she used to view her beauty. But the symbolism of protection is unmistakable, as Venus has a favorable contact with Jupiter, the planet of luck and blessings, and Pluto, the planet of death. The October 31st Sun in Scorpio position is in a square aspect to Harry's birth Sun. Voldemort met his match in this small child – and children are ruled by the sign of Leo!
In-depth forecasts of Harry's 6th and 7th years at Hogwarts appear in a separate article.
Note: Harry's birth chart is set for July 31, 1980, near London, at 10:30 p.m. This time was rectified by comparing his birth planets to his known traits and event planets, and lining up the houses in a way that makes the most sense. Rectification is a common technique used by astrologers for clients who do not know their time of birth.
