SYNASTRY:

THE HARRY-HERMIONE RELATIONSHIP: COULD IT BE LOVE?

by Elizabeth Hazel, Astrologer

Updated: Feb. 2005

Synastry is the technique used to compare the birth charts of two individuals for compatibility. Usually astrologers use this technique when a couple is in an intimate relationship, and exploring the possibility of a lasting relationship or marriage. This method can also stretch to compare friendships, working relationships, and almost any other chart-to-chart relationship analysis you can imagine.

The comparison element that most non-astrologers seem to be familiar with is Sun sign compatibility. Harry is a Leo and Hermione is a Virgo. These are sequential signs in the zodiac. As next-door-neighbors, Leos and Virgos can learn from each other, and have different perspectives on life that they can share. Leo men tend to prefer physically attractive women with a good sense of style and fashion, confidence, witty conversation, and skill in developing social relationships that they can both enjoy. They want a woman they can be proud of, who can enjoy play and romance, and will stand by them through thick and thin. Virgo women tend to prefer men that will work hard to create a secure home and financial foundation, and who will pass their tests of loyalty and planning for the future. They need men who will value their efforts, are not afraid of intimacy, and who will share their need for domestic peace.

The three most important components of synastry are the Sun sign, Moon sign, and Ascending signs of the two charts being compared. Other planetary relationships can add or detract, but these three components set the overall tone of a relationship. Since Rowling has not provided the time of birth for either, Harry and Hermione's charts have been rectified for the purpose of writing this series of articles. Harry's rectified time has confirmed its validity, but Hermione's has yet to face its most critical tests.

Yet for the sake of discussion, Harry's Ascendant is Aries (the same as his Moon sign) and Hermione's Ascendant is Aquarius. These two signs are compatible, as the elements, fire and air, work well together. The Ascendant of a chart delineates the body type, personality, and overall perceptivity of the individual. Harry's Aries Ascendant makes him a risk-taker, bold and forthright, with little fear of physical danger or heights – one might describe him as thrill-seeking. He is athletic, with swift and well-coordinated reflexes, and relies on his speed and maneuverability rather than brute strength. He has a volatile temper when provoked. Harry gravitates toward people who share his love of adventure, good humor, and being one of the good guys. In relationships, Harry (so far) has been haphazard – he responds to his physical attraction to girls without any deep consideration of the kind of emotional tie he would like to develop.

Hermione's Aquarian Ascendant gives her a fairly easy-going personality toward others, accepting people for who they are. Although she is healthy, she avoids physical risks and does not like flying. She doesn't seem to take particular pains with her appearance unless a formal event requires it – this rising sign prefers casual and comfortable attire. Her frizzy, bushy hair is continually mentioned; she can control this with a hair potion, but is not inclined to do this on a daily basis. Generally Hermione keeps her emotions under a lid, only revealing them when she is badly insulted about her appearance or feels rejected. While she is very good at explaining the emotions of others, it is rare for her to share her feelings. Hermione is more comfortable in the structure of platonic relationships. She would be slow and cautious about moving into an intimate relationship, and would want love to grow out of friendship.

Harry's Aries Ascendant will be tolerant of Hermione's quirks and eccentricities; recognizes her fear of physical danger and clearly takes steps to protect her when necessary during crisis situations. He admires her need to protect the underdogs (like Neville) as well as her fierce intelligence. Hermione's Aquarian Ascendant admires Harry's physical courage and his inherent nobility of manner in spite of his terrible home life. She appreciates his ability to protect her, and accepts that he has a "saving people thing," even if he doesn't recognize it in himself. She also recognizes his volatile temper. This scares her a bit, but generally she works to calm him and direct him to a more logic-based reaction. If this doesn't work, she goes a step further and points out when he's overreacting and taking his temper out on others. The rectified Ascendants are, so far, the most compatible features of these charts.

Hermione with a Capricorn Moon (1980) doesn't flow well with Harry; but with a Virgo Moon (1979) she is much more compatible with him. Couples without a good Moon-to-Moon contact do not fare well over time. The Moon rules the emotional nature and capacity for intimacy, as well as the ability to feel comfortable in life. Without a compatible Moon relationship, misunderstandings dog the heels of a couple, as the emotional nature is the chief component of personal relationships.

So would Hermione be any better off with Ron? Ron's birth data is Mar 1, 1980, making him a Pisces Sun sign and Virgo Moon sign. Opposite signs attract, and Hermione's Virgo Sun is in the opposite sign from Ron's in Pisces. Ron's Virgo Moon matches her Sun sign – another sign of attraction and compatibility. Nevertheless, Ron's Saturn is exactly conjunct her Sun, suggesting that he would tend to oppress her, and may undermine her efforts to be seen in the way that pleases her most – as an intellectual. Hermione's Moon conjuncts Ron's Moon: although they witness the same things, his processing of what he sees doesn't match hers because she is the better analyst. His Moon is joined with Jupiter and Mars, so he tends to jump to conclusions and emotionalize his responses without much thought. She doesn't like his haphazard views and immaturity in his dealings with women. Overall, she can eat him for breakfast, and he resents it. But since they are both Harry's friends, these combative tendencies between Ron and Hermione are downplayed in their efforts to keep their friendships running smoothly.

One thing that is very clear when comparing these three charts: Harry, Hermione, and Ron all bring very different gifts, viewpoints, and skills into their friendship. As a "dream team" these three kids are able to support and counsel each other for the benefit of their development. They are all protective of one another in different ways, depending on individual capacity. Harry protects as a physical defender and warrior; Hermione protects with her intellect and political astuteness; and Ron protects with his large family and wizard world understanding of cultural intricacies.

       J. K. Rowling has presented readers with a trio of friends. As an author with an excellent sense of humor, a mischievous streak, and the propensity for romance that Leos have, she hints and teases us with the possibility of romance between Harry, Hermione and Ron. And they have already developed a close bond through their school experiences. But intimacy is a bond that requires more maturity and experience than these children have.

And while astrology can outline specific advantages and difficulties couples will have in their relationship, ultimately the couple has to work on a relationship to sustain it. There are plenty of couples with difficult chart relationships that have been happily together for decades; similarly, there are couples with good charts that break up after a few years. Good or bad chart contacts only delineate what the couple has to work with and the obstacles they must overcome to keep the relationship intact. Harry and Hermione have a strong friendship that has withstood many tests. They have a good understanding of each other's weaknesses and strengths. Their relationship will be put to the test in books 6 & 7, as the threat from Lord Voldemort grows more urgent. A battle to the death looms over Harry. He may have a very difficult time coming to terms with his need to have close friends and relationships, versus his propensity for putting those he loves in danger by his very affection.
